Special Education Coordinator

Stephen began his role as Special Education Coordinator at Spire in August, 2025. He is a life-long educator having spent forty years in private and public school settings. Stephen is passionate about the intellectual and personal development of children, particularly in his work with secondary school students. He has worked as a history and social studies teacher, a school building and district-level administrator, and most recently as a special educator.

He holds a B.A. in Political Science from Amherst College, an M.A. in Social Studies from Wesleyan University, and Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut in Educational Leadership. His dissertation focused on the ethical functioning of public and private schools. a vision that guides his work to this day. In both his work as a school practitioner and adjunct professor at local universities, he has overseen curriculum development, supported teacher education and mentorship, and articulated a message of student-centered learning.

A lifelong resident of Fairfield county, he is proud to come from a family of educators, including his wife who has taught kindergarten since graduating from college. He has been involved in sports, including coaching and officiating at the high school level. He also enjoys taking his dog, Gus, for walks, working on crossword puzzles, golfing, and grilling.
